An illustrative report using approaches to analysing film theory

In this report, i will be talking about two film directors and if they are considered to be part of the auteur, feminism or queer filmmakers. My two chosen directors are Spike lee and Wes Anderson.

Spike Lee is an auteur director who is of African American background and lives in New York. . An Auteur director is a director who’s personal views, creative vision and expressions are expressed throughout the movie and can be seen in different scenes when watching the movie. A little history about Spike Lee is that he was a music director and a documentarian. He directed some music videos for famous names such as Michael Jackson,Anita Baker, etc. Another thing is he known for is making commercials for big companies such as Nike, Ben & Jerry's etc. He’s an african American and most of his films contain elements to do with racism, urban crime, violence etc.
His first movie “She gotta have it”  was a comedy film which is stereotypical vision on black men cheating on their partners but instead the roles were reversed and it focuses on black women having three different partners.
In another movie, Jungle Fever it is about a non -black person attracted sexually to black people in 1991 set in America. During this period racism was not on the low but on the rise in America so it was strange for a non black person to be sexually attracted to black people. (figure 1)In this scene,it is a wide shot of the white lady attracted to black men walking with her partner in public and bypassers staring at the couple in shock because it wasn't a normal thing to see in that time (1991). Spike Lee being a auteur theorist who relates to this issue of racial abuse towards black people expresses his view about how unsatisfying it is by using the characters to show how uncomfortable it is for coloured people.
Jungle Fever is also set in New York which Lee took small details from his personal life and included it in the movie.
In his other movie School Daze, it features images of slavery and prominent figures in the african american neighbourhood where the movie is set. (figure 2) In this scene, two sets of black males can be seen facing each other angrily in a wide shot capturing everyone and the crowd. Spike Lee uses this scene to represent the divide between the youth in Black communities and the need for peace to prevail among ourselves us individuals. The theme he uses in the movie is unity among the black community. His film reflect American society in two aspects; integration and segregation which he includes historical events to provide contexts for his films. Comparing his movie School daze to Bamboozled, he uses black face clips and images to reinforce the purpose of his films which is to “raise awareness of poor practices accepted in popular culture”  An example is in the scene below in his movie Bamboozled when a white man can be seen wearing a black face which is unaccepted by society and he points it out in his movie that such practices cannot be tolerated. (figure 3)
Spike Lee mostly uses his main characters for strong lead roles. He does this because they can relate to the emotional story behind the movie and can can act it out accordingly. An example is Denzel Washington who is of african american background  who featured in many of his movies including Malcom X.
All his movies are set in his hometown New York because all the problems he faced happened in New York and that shows that he’s a real auteur because it means so much to him.

Wes Anderson is an auteur direction who grew up in Texas. Wes developed his love for movie at university where he took part in a playwriting class at the university of Texas.  Most of his films are a mix of different themes.eg. Drama, adventure, comedy, romance etc. This shows that his films do not follow the conventions of general Hollywood screenwriting. Also most of his films are about families on the idea of parenthood and who’s in charge of the house. His movies also involves dysfunctional families and a lack of parental figures  for the young ones. For example in his movie “ The life aquatic” it relates to an absent parent in the life of a young one. His films are in that form because as a kid he lived through that experience as his parents divorced when he was 8 years old and this is the experience he tries to get through to audience in his movies.

His films highlight the key importance of friends, family, love etc. The friendship in most of his movies turns out to be romance and can be seen in his movie “Rushmore”. (figure 4). In this scene it is a medium shot of two students who seem to be friends walking in the hallway of a school. Attention is shifted on the face of the two students and their facial expression is different. There are sparks of love showing in this scene as the guy looks shy perhaps showing that he has a crush on the girl.

Anderson often places his characters in centre frame as we can see from the picture above. This is very different from the conventional filming style rule of thirds which sets him aside from modern directors. His sets are often complex and work like theatre sets than modern movie sets. And example is in the movie “the life aquatic” .(figure 5) This allows the camera to move more freely and capture everything going on in the scene while maintaining one shot type. His colour choice is often vibrant with clashing colours that creates a theatre like setting and a removal from modern era eg.”the moonlight kingdom”.  (figure 6) With his prop choice, his interests in the 50’s and 60’s can be seen inserted into his work.

Anderson over the years has used famous actors in his movies eg. Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Jeff goldblum etc. His use of the same cast and crew makes his work easier as they are used to him and his style of directing. Eg. Robert Yeoman as DOB as worked on every movie he directed as he is used to Anderson’s personal style.

In conclusion both directors use their movies to portray some real life events they faced in their childhood and the factors around them that changed their lifestyle or perhaps help them grow out of it. Spike Lee uses his characters to represent his emotions and how he feels towards the treatment of black Americans in New York and Wes Anderson uses comedy and family issues to show his upbringing with a single parent and how he coped without having two parental figures.

PURPOSE OF MUSIC VIDEOS

In this report I will be talking about the purposes of music videos. I will cover different aspects such as where people watch/consume music videos today and how it has changed over the years. I will also cover how music videos have increased income for record companies and lastly how music videos are used to promote a song, an artist, an artist album, and synergy with other media text.

In this paragraph, I will elaborate on the different ways people consume/watch music videos. In recent years, the vast majority of people watch music videos on the internet. The most common example is YouTube. In recent times, the percentage of people who use it to watch music videos is 40% more than any other category and this is according to Comsore. Examples of artist that upload their music videos to youtube include Drake, Michael Jackson, Stormzy etc. Before the existence of YouTube there was other ways people watched music videos such as tapes, DVD's and cinemas but the most common one was on Television. Television channels such as MTV, CMT, VH1, were devoted to broadcasting music videos to audience throughout the day and at night. These channels still operate but hasn't got a lot of views compared to YouTube and other internet sites which audience use to watch music videos.

One purpose of music videos which is increasing income for record companies. The major record labels are universal music group, Sony music entertainment, Warner music group etc.  Record companies are brands associated with the marketing of music videos and music recordings. They sign music artists on a deal and manage everything to do with their career including bookings and tours as well as music videos. The way in which music videos generates income for a record label is that if the music video is good, it raises the profile of the artist who belongs to the particular record label and that generates more money for the record label.

An example of a music artist who owns a record label is Jay Z. He owns a record label called "Roc nation" based in America. He makes his income through his label by signing artist and investing in them by managing their careers and investing into their music videos. He's worth $810 million combined with his record labels.

An example of a record label in the UK  is XL recordings and one artist signed to their label is Adele. So through her music videos the she gets more views interested in her music and that generates to more money for her record label so they can sign new artists. An example of a music video by Adele is "Send my love"  which is licensed to her record label XL recordings.  This music video generated 544 million views on youtube.  In the UK official charts, the song was in the top 10 for two weeks, and to 100 for 23 weeks.               https://www.officialcharts.com/search/singles/send%20my%20love/

Another way in which music videos are used to promote  an artist, Music video is to promote an artist's image and the song which is part of an album they are going to release. Music videos sells out the artists image to a target audience who end up liking the artist style and try imitate the artist. This can be seen in the way they dress or act like. An example is Lil baby who is a hip hop artiste in the USA and he falls under the stereotypical lifestyle of a hip hop artiste by showing flashy jewellery and wearing designer clothes in his music videos. His fans follow his style by wearing all these flashy jewellery and designer clothes just to be like him.

Synergy in music videos is where two  or more forms of media combine to make a promotional video. A good example is Pharrell Williams single "Happy". It has references to the film Despicable Me included in the music video and the actors were also included in the music video which is synergy. The editing helped raise the views of the music video because people enjoyed the use of minions in the music video which helped raise more money for the record label.

Another way artist promote their music videos is collaborating with other artist to gain more views and audience. An artist will gain exposure to different audience by collaborating with another artist from a different music genre. An example is Stormy ft MNEK - blinded by your grace pt 2. Stormy is a grime artist and the target audience for most of his songs are teenagers and young adults from rural areas in London and MNEK is a r&b singer who's target audience are usually young female adults.  This music video generated 9.5 million views on youtube.

To summarise, Music videos help promote the artiste and the song the artiste is releasing and help generate more income for the record label the artiste is signed to. It also shows the audience what style the artiste is attached.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNT SO FAR

At the beginning of the course, I learnt the three key stages of media production and they are Pre-production, production and post production. Pre production is the planning stage which includes script, call sheet, casting, storyboard, treatment etc. which then allows you to progress to the production stage. The production stage is where the main filming takes place. This is the stage where you put all your ideas from pre production into action then when you're finished you can progress onto the final stage which is post production. Post production includes sample viewing, editing, colour grading etc.

We then moved on to the types of research methods and the types of target audience. There are two types of research methods which are primary research(first hand) and secondary research(established). For target audience the main types are primary audience who the film was aimed directly at and secondary audience who are second class of people to watch or buy the media text.

Talking about media text I learnt that there are 10 media sectors namely; marketing/advertising, radio, publication(books), Film, Video games, TV, Animation, Interactive media(websites), Photo imaging, Press(newspapers).  there are three other words that define media and they are forms, text, and industry.

The term Genre originated from France and means type. The purpose of genre is to differentiate a media text and marketing. There are different classifications of genre such as cross over genre, iconography, sub-genre, intertextuality, hybrid/synergy etc.
A cross over genre is a genre that appears in different text and different forms(sectors). eg. horror film, horror website etc.
Iconography are visuals and audio that distinguish a genre. Eg. wearing a mask in a horror film, wearing flashy jewelleries in a hip hop music video.
A sub genre is a genre underneath another genre in a media text. And within that media text there will be elements of the other genre showcased in it.
Intertextuality is when a media text refers to another media text and this is done by institutions to get audience interested into buying their product. Eg. In the American based series THE BIG BANG
THEORY the character Sheldon cooper is seen in countless scenes wearing a flash t-shirt which is a merchandise of another media text. the purpose of intertextuality is to pay homage to another media text
Hybrid is when genres come together to make something new. EG. drama-comedy, melodrama, action-thriller etc.
Synergy is when films, text comes together to make a music video eg. shiro story, David Fincher(imdb.com) fight club, panic club etc.

After genre we moved on to purpose of music videos and here are some key purposes;
1.Promotion of the artist, record label and genre - it showcases the artist on a different level as well as the brand they represent and that generates revenue for the record label and pushes the genre further.
2.Extension of income - This is to get more people interested in the artist and the record label.
3.Extension of outlets - which can be a music channel (the box, mtv live, and capital TV), direct DVD and CD sales (wild style, purple rain) and websites (bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment) and the website can be used to check the charts and what new music video is being released.

We moved on to Producers strategies such as MESCFX. The M stands for mise-en-sene which are the props we see in a text eg.vehicles in a pop music video. The E stands for editing and S is for sound and any audio we hear in a media text.; The C is for camera and it is the angles where a shot is taken and how close, medium, or wide a shot is. FX is for spcail effects in a media text and these are some producer strategies used in media text.

in conclusion, this is what I have learnt so far since we started this course.

Media Studies, 45 commercial radio
Fay Steve

Q: Can you give at least 3 purposes of commercial radio, using detailed examples.(300 words)

Throughout the essay, I will be discussing various purposes of commercial radio; referring to some major commercial radio's such as BBC radio 1, capital Xtra etc.

Commercial radio is communicating with a huge audience through a medium they trust. The main purpose of commercial radio is to earn profit for its stockholders, by selling a product to its audience which can be done in the form of advertising. Due to the huge audience some commercial radio stations have, big companies advertise their products with them and both parties end up making profit.
Another purpose of commercial radio is for people(audience) to know what is going on in the world. A lot of people are busy and therefore do not have time to go unto the internet to find out whats going on nationally or internationally so they rely on commercial radio to feed them the latest news. An example is BBC radio 1 who have 9,236,000 listeners per week based on research.
Lastly the purpose of commercial radio is to provide entertainment to listeners. an example is Capital Xtra which airs music throughout the day and has daily interviews with music stars to provide entertainment to listeners. Because of this they've had huge successes in terms of audience growth and target audience.

In conclusion, commercial radio has a purpose in our everyday life from providing us with daily news reports and also entertaining everyone no matter your age, color or gender. Personally, I feel that commercial radio plays a massive impact in the lives of the listeners and its become a part of who we are.
